Lesson: Whole Brain Module

SSD & SAD Whole Brain Set-ups
The difference between the two is that the SAD set-up is an isocentric set-up; that is, you can rotate the gantry 360 degrees around the patient, and is always 100cm to the central axis.
The SSD set-up is a set-up that is 100 cm to the surface of the skin. In this set-up, it is critical to re-adjust the patient after rotating from one side to another. If a patient is set-up at 100 SSD to the right lateral; and then the gantry is rotated to the left lateral side, the new SSD will be 100cm – IFD (patient thickness). So, if the patient’s head is 15 cm thick, the new SSD would be 85 cm. The patient would have to be re-adjusted to the correct SSD for the patient to be treated correctly.
